We established the first organ procurement organisation (OPO) in the UAE. The aim was to promote and assist in the identification and testing of potential organ donors, along with the education of staff and families about donation opportunities. An average 627% and 636% increase in donors and organs have showed the success of the organisation respectively in the first fewyears of operation. This operation was so successful as a model, that this has now been taken up by Federal Authorities and made into a National Service. Organ failure is known to cause suffering across the globe and leads to poor healthcare outcomes and high morbidity and mortality, as well as very high healthcare costs spent on organ replacement therapies or other organ failure services. The provision of solid organ transplantation is well developed in many countries and techniques and survival are now well understood. In almost all countries, transplantation provides a better quality of life to patients with organ failure and is far more cost effective than almost any other therapy, especially for the most commonly transplanted organ, the kidney.
